Life at the pace of the cow
This site has been created to give those browsing it a more complete picture of Castrotañe and the surrounding area as well as providing some pictoral information about our holiday houses.
Set in the heart of the beautiful timeless region of the Ribeira Sacra in the southern central part of Galicia, Castrotañe is a tiny hamlet with about 4 houses, two of which are available for your holiday.
We are situated on one of the lesser trodden Caminos de Santiago, The Winter Route or La Ruta de Invierno, in the tranquil countryside of South Lugo. Although very peaceful, we are also really close to more lively places. For example within 7km we have all the facilities that you will require for your holiday. There are at least 3 swimming pools and 2 river beach within 7 to 15 kms, as well as a PGA standard golf course and spa. During the winter Manzaneda, our very own Ski Centre (Also open 12 months of the year for out door activities) is about an hour and a half drive from the house. Restaurants abound and our "local" is within 2km. Supermarkets, Hospital, Police, Railway station and museums are situated in Monforte de Lemos, our nearest big town which is about 7km.
Further afield Santiago de Compostela, Ourense and Lugo are all fabulous cities to visit and explore. Walk the ancient walls of Lugo, enjoy the thermal baths in Ourense or follow in the foosteps of the pilgrims and pay a visit to Santiago de Compostela. All are within an hour and a half´s drive.
The coastal regions of Galicia offer a huge variety of experiences, and the interior mountains and hills are some of the most beautiful places anywhere in the world. The Ribeira Sacra, is a region steeped in wine and history, with the 2 main rivers of the region forming focal points for much touristic activity. It has it own wine denominaton, and the wine museum in Monforte de Lemos is well worth a visit.
Galicia has a wealth of history stretching back to to the earliest known men and everything from then to now! Music and art are very important and each council put on its own offerings all year round. If you are looking for a holiday that is unusual we suggest here.
